My Personal Setup

I personally have installed a pressure style blast cabinet in my home garage shop, specifically the PSBC990 from Atlas. I chose this unit for its ability to maximize the blasting power of my already installed air compressor system, my available square footage in my garage, and the cabinet dimensions to fit what I most commonly expect to sand blast, such as wheels, subframes, and suspension components.

I also wanted something that did not require a large swinging door, so this unit is front loaded with a shock assisted upward folding door. As you can see, the inner dimension is fairly large!


My unit is paired with my 80 gallon, 5hp, 2 stage, 220v Ingersoll Rand air compressor with roughly ~16 CFM at 90psi. This air compressor is, in my opinion, the SMALLEST you would want for a sand blast cabinet of this size. I do also have PEX lines plumbed throughout my garage with a few retractable hoses and a few direct lines feeding my blast cabinets (I also have a vapor honing machine that requires air).

Take care in thinking through your future layout, not just what you have today but what you plan to need or want in the future and the space constraints you are working with today. In my case, I knew I would need a large amount of air and power. Remember this when you lay out your home shop. As you can see, they are both rather large, and take up a significant amount of prime real estate in the garage.

For delicate items, you will want to ensure the workpiece is securely fastened inside the cabinet using clamps or fixtures to keep it in place while undergoing the blasting process.
  4. Fine-tune the Blasting Parameters
    Make sure to fine-tune the blasting pressure and media flow based on the specific material and the desired finish you’re aiming for. Different pressure levels are ideal for different types of materials and cleaning needs. Higher pressures are recommended for tough materials and heavy-duty cleaning tasks, while lower pressures are more suitable for delicate surfaces.   5. Actual Sandblasting
    Remember to wear the protective gloves that come with the cabinet, and even though it is in the cabinet I would include safety goggles and a dust mask. Put your hands into the gloves and firmly hold onto the blasting nozzle. Direct the nozzle towards the workpiece and initiate the blasting process. For optimal results, it is important to move the nozzle in a smooth and continuous motion. This will help to evenly distribute the coverage. It’s important to keep moving around to avoid excessive blasting.

If needed, you can go through the process again for any areas that require extra focus. After you’re done, take out the workpiece from the cabinet and make sure to wipe away any leftover abrasive material.
